Set 2: Dupree's Diamond Blues, Mountains of the Moon > Dark Star > St. Set 1: Good Morning Little School Girl, Doin' That Rag, That's It For The Other One Stephen from Live/Dead is on here, and the rest of the show is just as great. Jerry's playing is unbelievable, Phil's bass lines are exactly what you'd like them to be, the drumming is perfect, Pigpen is raunchy as hell, Bob is super creative, and Tom Constanten's organ complements Jerry's playing in an unprecedented way.ĭark Star > St. In my opinion, this is one of the best runs of shows in their entire career. This four night run at the Fillmore West has gone on to be known as some of the finest live Dead to be found in their psychedelic era, with many of the recordings being used on their 1969 live album, Live/Dead. Set 2: That's It For the Other One > New Potato Caboose > Born Cross-Eyed > Spanish Jam, Alligator > Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks) > Feedback > In the Midnight HourīONUS TRACKS: Viola Lee Blues, Beat It on Down the Line, It Hurts Me Too, Dark Star Set 1: Morning Dew, Good Morning Little School Girl, Dark Star > China Cat Sunflower > The Eleven > Turn on Your Lovelight, BONUS TRACKS While there are numerous sloppy moments, this release highlights an amazing era of Grateful Dead with a fantastic show and superb bonus tracks (especially that mind-blowing Viola Lee Blues) with incredible sound quality for the Dead era. The rest of the show is pure energy with an amazing China Cat > The Eleven > Lovelight, and a super trippy Spanish Jam, and an Alligator > Caution that highlights Jerry's frantic guitar playing. While this early version is short, it's historically really cool to hear. This show has the first official appearance of Dark Star, the legendary Grateful Dead jam that would be their crown jewel of improvisation in the years to come. They attacked these songs, approaching them from all directions they could and completely annihilated them. This 1968 show is a perfect showcase of how hungry and young they were.

Phil Lesh - Bass (and vocals from 1966-95) If you're looking for a place to start with their massive discography, I'd recommend starting with Cornell 5/8/77 (if you're looking for a full show) or Europe '72 (if you're looking for more of a bluesy sound). I will also be covering the history of the band as I listen to each show. Because every version of every song is different, there are countless live releases, and I aim on listening to all of them and putting my thoughts in this list.

Throughout the last two years, the Grateful Dead have quickly become one of, if not my favorite band of all time. "There's nothing like a Grateful Dead concert." - Bill Graham
